How to Make Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii) Produce More Flowers

Crown of Thorns, or Euphorbia milii, is a popular flowering plant known for its long-lasting blooms and easy care. But sometimes, it stops blooming or only gives a few flowers. If you’re wondering how to get more flowers from your Crown of Thorns, we will explain to you here.

At PKP Garden, we’ve grown and studied this plant for years.
Here are
3 proven ways to help your Euphorbia milii bloom more often and more beautifully.

1. Remove Old Flowers Regularly

Once a flower has turned brown or lost its color, it’s time to remove it. Dead or dying flowers may still use nutrients from the plant, which could slow down the growth of new blooms.

  • Trim off old, faded flowers to redirect the plant’s energy.

  • Removing old flowers encourages the plant to focus on growing new, healthy ones.

  • It might feel hard to cut off any flower, but the result is worth it — more fresh and colorful blooms will follow.

2. Give It Enough Sunlight

Sunlight is the key to more flowers. Crown of Thorns needs direct sunlight for at least 3 to 5 hours per day to bloom well.

  • Without enough sun, the plant will grow more leaves than flowers.

  • Place it in a bright, sunny location — outdoors or by a sunny window if indoors.

  • If possible, morning or late afternoon sunlight is best.

3. Use Fertilizer to Support Flowering

Fertilizer is not always required, but the right formula can help boost flower production.

  • At PKP Garden, we use Osmocote 13-13-13, a balanced fertilizer that supports overall plant health and flower growth.

  • Use a small amount every 3-6 months to keep your plant well-fed.

  • Avoid over-fertilizing will NOT help the plant, but instead can harm the roots or produce too much leaf growth.

Summary

To help your Crown of Thorns give more flowers, remember these 3 steps:

  1. Remove dead flowers

  2. Give it enough sun

  3. Use a balanced fertilizer when needed
